About Solar

PV is the acronym for photovoltaic and Solar PV is referred to Solar Panels which generate electricity. Customers often get confused with Solar Thermal Panels also referred to as Solar Collectors or Solar Tubes. Solar Thermal is designed to heat up water, stored in a cylinder by transferring heat using a liquid and do not generate electricity like Solar PV Panels.
Solar Panels are activated with sunlight and the cells within the Solar Panel generate electricity. This electricity is converted from DC to AC with an Inverter so you can use this electric in your home or business.
A Solar Battery is like a Giant Rechargeable Battery. It continues providing electric to your appliances without you having to import electric from the grid. It is charged by your Solar System but could also be charged from the Grid if required.
Its simple. If you use all your electric appliances during the daytime then a battery may not be recommended. However, if you are using electric appliances in the evening/night or dependant on your evening stand alone running costs, adding a battery would be highly advantageous with more energy savings subject to your design.
A Hybrid Inverter is an all-in-one unit which allows DC power from your Solar converted to AC as well as AC power from the Grid converted to DC to store in your Battery.
Solar Panels will work in the winter as it is activated by sunlight but will not produce as much energy as it does in the summer months. A detailed breakdown is provided for winter months, summer months and for the whole year.
It’s a misconception that solar panels only work when the sun is shining. Solar Panels work at its  maximum efficiency when the sun is shining but will still work on cloudy days or during the winter. Giant Solar will go through this with you including factoring in any shading.

Network Operators and Governing Bodies

The National Grid own the main electricity transmission network that supplies all electricity in Britain. They make electricity through a variety of different sources such as wind turbines, solar and nuclear power stations.

Electricity is then distributed to your home or business by the DNO (Distribution Network Operator) using high voltage cables, transformers and towers. National Grid also operates as a DNO.

In total, there are 6 Distribution Network Operators in the UK including the National Grid and they’re responsible for their own region, managing all the supplies and transformer loads. Dependant on the size of your Solar PV System, DNO approval may be required.

It is also a requirement for installers to notify the DNO of every install within 28 days.

Giant Solar will act on your behalf to obtain DNO approvals where required and will promptly carry out all notifications post installation.

The Energy Supplier is the Company who you pay your electricity bill to. Each supplier purchases energy known as the wholesale price and every supplier adds their own costs to give us the retail price. Your bill will also include a percentage which goes towards the running costs of DNO’s.

Giant Solar believes, no matter what temporary caps or benefits are put in place, prices will always increase and one of our goals is for you to take the power in your hands for total control and independence.

The Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) is an independent Company but supported by Government to certify renewable energy products. Without MCS certification you are unable to export energy under the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) and when you sell your home, most will request a copy of your MCS certificate to ensure it has met the required standard with building control notifications.

Despite installers being MCS registered, your certificate may not get issued, so be cautious and make sure you receive your official MCS Certificate from your installer.

Our MCS membership number is IAA-10085 and we will promptly register your installation and send you a copy of your official MCS Certificate with a comprehensive Handover Pack on completion of your installation.

The Consumer Code is all about consumer protection.

The consumer code will vet and check all sales practices of the installer including, contracts and performance calculations to ensure it goes above and beyond consumer law obligations.

Should the installer not fulfil its obligations during the warranty period or ceases to trade, the Insurance Backed Guarantee (IBG) will protect your investment.

Once again, the installer may not register your installation despite being a member, so make sure you have received your insurance documents which should come directly from the IBG Provider.

Our chosen consumer code is HIES who is also an Insurance Backed Guarantee (IBG) Provider. Our registration number is GIA/A/1546 and we will promptly register your insurance protecting your investment including your deposit.

Usage and Locations

Giant Solar will analyse your electricity bills but will also depend on the size of your roof and at what times you consume more energy.

On average, a 4+ bedroom house consumes approx 4100kw a year and subject to your design, a 10kw Battery is recommended in this instance with 10+ Solar Panels.

With the right design and configuration with off peak charging where required, you could save more than 70% off your electric bills. In a few instances, we have customers who are almost off grid but installation costs need to be taken into consideration to maximise your overall savings.

It is better to use your appliances during the day for maximum savings but the battery has you covered for evenings subject to demand. Giant Solar will design and tailor your system the best way possible. Get a quote to see how we can maximise your savings.

Using your mobile phone app, you can see live generation and performance data with a user friendly interface. A full walkthrough will be provided going through all the functions, so you can monitor your usage on the move including battery and panel performance, daily savings, export and how much energy you have imported on a daily basis.

You can also set battery functions to charge from the grid at night. Giant Solar will configure this for you on completion of your installation and subject to the size of your solar array/battery, you may not need to charge from the grid at all.

Solar Panels are fitted on South or East/West facing roofs including flat roofs. Solar Panels can also be ground mounted. Contact us for more information.
Batteries can be fitted inside or outside and some are IP65 rated but we will go through the recommended location to future proof your investment dependant on the chosen Battery for your installation.

In case of a power cut, your inverter will shut down and not provide power, but you will be able to use stored energy from your battery providing an additional battery back up or circuit is added.

Contact us for more information.

Giant Solar can install off-grid inverters and design your system to be fully off grid but installation costs will need to be taken into consideration.

Maintenance

Solar Panels have shown to work for decades with non existent or very little product/performance related issues. The lifespan of Solar Panels is 30 plus years and a Battery 10 plus years. All our batteries will have a 10 year warranty.

We also include the cost of a replacement battery in our performance calculations so you get accurate and true savings with our Design and Quote.

All our calculations are based on a 20 year pay back period although your savings will go beyond 20 years.

Solar Panels have a Hrdrophobic coating and are generally self cleaning with rainfall. However, in some cases it may not fully clean a build up of bird droppings or lichen and should you want to keep your panels in pristine condition with continued high performance, Giant Solar has you covered.
